Traditional Indian Fry Bread (Print Version)

Crisp, golden bread fried until puffed and light. Serve with sweet or savory toppings, perfect for any meal.

# Ingredients:

→ Dough

01 - 2 cups all-purpose flour
02 - 1 teaspoon baking powder
03 - 1/2 teaspoon salt
04 - 3/4 cup warm water, plus more as needed

→ Frying

05 - Vegetable oil, for deep frying

# Steps:

01 - Whisk together all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl until evenly combined.
02 - Slowly add warm water while stirring just until a soft, non-sticky dough forms. Add additional water as needed for consistency.
03 - Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and knead gently for 3 to 5 minutes until smooth. Cover and let rest for 30 minutes.
04 - Divide dough into 6 to 8 equal pieces. Using a rolling pin or hands, flatten each piece into a circle about 1/4 inch thick.
05 - Pour 1 to 2 inches of vegetable oil into a heavy pan. Heat over medium heat to 350°F. Test with a small dough piece; it should sizzle and bubble immediately.
06 - Carefully slide one dough piece at a time into hot oil. Fry for 1 to 2 minutes per side, flipping once, until puffed and golden brown. Fry in batches to avoid crowding. Place fried bread on paper towels to drain excess oil.
07 - Serve fry bread warm. Top with savory choices like taco beef and shredded cheese or opt for honey, powdered sugar, or fruit jam for a sweet option.

# Notes:

01 - Resting time helps relax gluten for easier shaping and better texture.
02 - Ensure oil stays at 350°F for consistent results; lower temperatures can result in greasy bread.
