Southern Sausage Fluffy Biscuits (Print Version)

Buttermilk biscuits and savory sausage patties combine for a classic Southern-style morning treat.

# Ingredients:

→ Biscuits

01 - 2 cups all-purpose flour
02 - 1 tablespoon baking powder
03 - 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
04 - 1 teaspoon salt
05 - 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed
06 - 3/4 cup cold buttermilk

→ Sausage Filling

07 - 1 pound breakfast sausage
08 - Sliced cheddar cheese or American cheese (optional)

# Steps:

01 - Preheat the oven to 425°F.
02 - In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until fully combined.
03 - Add the cold cubed butter to the bowl. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, blend until the mixture forms coarse crumbs.
04 - Pour in the cold buttermilk and gently mix just until the dough comes together. Avoid overworking.
05 - Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, fold it gently several times, then roll it to a 1-inch thickness.
06 - Cut dough into rounds with a biscuit cutter and arrange on a baking sheet.
07 - Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
08 - While the biscuits are baking, shape the breakfast sausage into patties slightly larger than the biscuit rounds. Cook the patties in a skillet over medium heat for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through. Drain on paper towels.
09 - Split the warm biscuits in half. Place a cooked sausage patty inside each biscuit. Add sliced cheese, if desired. Close with the biscuit tops and serve hot.

# Notes:

01 - For maximal flakiness, keep ingredients cold and avoid overmixing the dough.
