In a medium saucepan, place granulated sugar, light corn syrup, water, lemon juice, and salt. Stir gently over medium heat until the sugar fully dissolves.

Increase the heat to bring the mixture to a boil without stirring. Attach a candy thermometer and heat until the temperature reaches 260°F (hard-ball stage).

Immediately remove from heat. Stir in Kool-Aid drink mix packets and food coloring if using, mixing thoroughly until homogenous.

Lightly grease a flat surface or use parchment paper. Dust the surface with cornstarch. Pour the hot candy onto the prepared surface.

Allow candy to cool just until safe to handle but still pliable. Stretch, pull, and fold repeatedly until glossy and elastic. Shape into ropes approximately 1/2 inch thick.

Slice ropes into preferred lengths and dust with additional cornstarch to prevent sticking. Allow ropes to fully cool and set before serving.
