Homemade Spaghetti Sauce (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Meat

01 - 1 pound Italian sausage (hot, mild, or sweet)
02 - 1 pound lean ground beef

→ Aromatics

03 - 1 large sweet onion, diced
04 - 5 cloves garlic, minced

→ Seasonings

05 - 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
06 - 2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning
07 - 1 teaspoon kosher salt
08 - 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
09 - 1/3 cup fresh chopped parsley

→ Tomato Base

10 - 12 ounces tomato paste
11 - 1 can (15 ounces) fire roasted diced tomatoes
12 - 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes

→ Liquid

13 - 1/2 cup chicken or beef broth

# Instructions:

01 - In a large pot over medium-high heat, add the Italian sausage and ground beef. Break the meat into small pieces with a wooden spoon. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, cooking until meat is completely browned with no pink remaining. Drain excess fat.
02 - Reduce heat to medium. Incorporate sugar, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and parsley into the meat mixture. Add tomato paste and stir thoroughly to combine.
03 - Pour in the fire roasted diced tomatoes with their liquid, crushed tomatoes, and broth. Stir well until fully combined. Bring mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and allow to simmer for at least 1 hour, preferably 3 hours for deeper flavor development.
04 - Use immediately, refrigerate for later use, or freeze in portions for longer storage.

# Notes:

01 - Sugar helps balance the acidity of the tomatoes, but can be reduced or omitted according to taste preference.
02 - For a smoother sauce, blend the fire roasted tomatoes before adding.
03 - The flavor deepens significantly with longer simmering time.
