01 - 1 pound lean ground beef (85/15 or 90/10)
02 - 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed French onion soup
03 - 1/2 cup sour cream or cream cheese
04 - 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère, Swiss, or mozzarella cheese
05 - 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions, plus extra for garnish
06 - Salt, to taste
07 - Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

→ Optional Additions

08 - Sautéed mushrooms
09 - Cooked noodles
10 - Fresh thyme

# Steps:

01 - Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
02 - In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef, breaking it apart as it browns. Season with salt and pepper.
03 - Drain excess fat from the skillet. Stir in the French onion soup and sour cream until mixture is creamy and fully combined.
04 - Spread the beef mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
05 - Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the beef layer, then top generously with crispy fried onions.
06 - Bake uncovered for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbling and the top is golden brown.
07 - Allow to cool slightly for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with additional fried onions if desired.

# Notes:

01 - If the fried onions brown too quickly while baking, cover the casserole loosely with foil to prevent burning.
