01 -
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Generously grease a 9-inch pie dish with butter or nonstick spray. Set aside.
02 -
In a large bowl, combine melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Whisk until the mixture is smooth and glossy. Add eggs one at a time, whisking after each. Stir in vanilla extract until blended.
03 -
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt to evenly distribute leavening and salt.
04 -
Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture. Gently stir with a spatula or wooden spoon until just combined. Do not overmix.
05 -
Fold in semi-sweet chocolate chips. If using, also fold in nuts and additional chocolate chips. Mix until evenly distributed.
06 -
Spoon dough into prepared pie dish. Spread evenly with a spatula or back of a spoon. Smooth the top and, if desired, sprinkle extra chocolate chips on top.
07 -
Place dish in the center of the preheated oven. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until edges are golden and center is just set. Loosely cover with foil if the top browns too quickly.
08 -
Remove from oven and cool in the dish for 15 to 20 minutes before slicing. The center should remain soft and gooey as it continues to set while cooling.
