Classic Baked Vanilla Custard (Print Version)

Smooth vanilla custard baked to creamy perfection, dusted with nutmeg and chilled for a delicate finish.

# Ingredients:

→ Base Mixture

01 - 4 cups whole milk
02 - 4 large eggs
03 - 1/2 cup granulated sugar
04 - 1/4 teaspoon fine salt
05 - 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

→ Topping and Garnish

06 - Ground nutmeg, for sprinkling
07 - Fresh berries, for serving (optional)

# Steps:

01 - Preheat oven to 350°F. Set a 1 1/2-quart round baking dish inside a larger deep baking pan.
02 - In a small saucepan over medium heat, warm the milk until bubbles form around the edge. Remove from heat immediately.
03 - In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, granulated sugar, and salt until thoroughly blended but not foamy.
04 - Gradually whisk the hot milk into the egg mixture to temper, then stir in vanilla extract.
05 - Pour the custard mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle evenly with ground nutmeg.
06 - Place the larger baking pan onto the oven rack. Fill the pan with very hot water until it reaches 1/2 inch below the rim of the baking dish.
07 - Bake for 55 to 60 minutes, or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. The center should remain slightly jiggly.
08 - Carefully remove the baking dish from the water bath and transfer to a wire rack. Let cool for 30 minutes, then refrigerate until thoroughly chilled.
09 - Serve cold, optionally garnished with fresh berries.

# Notes:

01 - For a silkier texture, always strain the custard mixture before baking to remove any coagulated bits.
